Charlotte Wang is a postdoctoral fellow in Sociology and the Berkeley Interdisciplinary Migration Initiative between 2026 and 2029. She is a Spring 2026 PhD graduate from Columbia University's Department of Sociology.
Charlotte studies becoming processes at the intersections of migration, racialization, culture, and place. Her current work explores the role of emotions in the persistence of ethnicity. In her PhD research, she uses life-history interviews and ethnographic methods to study the roots-seeking projects of second-plus-generation Chinese Americans, identifying the affective processes that reconstruct racialized belonging. Charlotte's in-progress book manuscript explores hauntings and other ghostly appearances in these data. More broadly, Charlotte is interested in how immigration and immigrant identities shape and are shaped by projected futures and imagined pasts. Prior to her PhD, Charlotte managed a multi-center research program on labor migration to the GCC, and her research on temporary labor migration from South India has been published in Social Science and Medicine.
