Victoria Huynh

PHD Student of Ethnic Studies

My research interests are in critical refugee studies, Vietnam / Southeast Asia / their diasporas, scholar-activist pedagogies, and abolition feminisms, specifically abolitionist responses to harm. My dissertation centers on Vietnamese refugees within the California carceral system, and looks at abolitionist organizing against incarceration and deportation.

Jasdeep Singh Hundal

Master's in International Policy Class

Jasdeep graduated from the Sciences Po Paris- UC Berkeley Dual BA program, where he graduated summa cum laude with BAs in Political Humanities and Sociology, and a minor in Data Science. During college, Jasdeep has interned with Save the Children Jordan, the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a Singapore-Indian EdTech startup. Eliza Hollingsworth

Eliza Hollingsworth worked as an Undergraduate Research Fellow for BIMI during the 2019 Summer semester working on writing a policy brief about Immigrants' access to services in the Bay Area. Eliza is a third-year undergraduate student from Oakland, CA with a keen interest in the public health effects of conflict, displacement, and migration. She is pursuing a BA in Global Studies with minors in Public Health and Public Policy, and outside of class, she works part-time as a caseworker at the International Rescue Committee. My name is Luis Hassan Gallardo, and I'm an undergraduate-DACA student at UC Berkeley, majoring in political science and ethnic studies. Alein Y. Haro

Ph.D Student, Health Policy

Alein Y. Haro, MPH, is a doctoral student in Health Policy - Population Health Sciences at UC Berkeley. Alein’s research examines the association between policies and health disparities among immigrant communities and minorities in the US. Her work seeks to clarify the individual, institutional, and structural mechanisms that link health and social policy changes to health care access and health outcomes. Isabel García Valdivia

Ph.D Candidate, Sociology

Based on a mixed-method approach, my dissertation explores the effects of legal status for Mexican older adult immigrants in the U.S. and return migrants to Mexico. In particular, this research focuses on the factors that facilitate or hinder how older adult immigrants access economic, family, medical and psychological support and the strategies they deploy as they age. I investigate how these differ across countries and by legal status.

Andrew Garcia Chavez

Andrew Chavez worked as a Communication and Outreach Fellow at BIMI in the Summer and Fall of 2020. He is a 4th year studying Political Economy and minoring in both Public Policy & Education. As the son of two working-class immigrants, he has experienced the effects of immigration policy first hand in his family. As a result, he wants to try his best in helping the immigrant community and their families in the Bay Area in any way he can.

Therese Nicole Franklin

Therese earned her bachelor’s degree in History from UCLA, her MPA from USC’s Price School of Public Policy, and she is currently finishing up her second Master’s degree in Global Studies at Cal. Rebecca C. Franklin

PhD Candidate, University of California, San Diego

Rebecca Franklin is a PhD Candidate in sociology at the University of California, San Diego. She received her B.A. from Oberlin College in Latin American Studies and History and her M.A. from American University in Latin American Studies and International Relations, the first portion of which was completed as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar at the Autonomous University of Puebla, Mexico. Her primary research interests are in race, gender, migration, and the workforce. She has taught undergraduate courses in Social Inequality and Racial and Ethnic Relations in the United States.
